On December 9, 1531, while walking through the country on his way to catechism class, Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to him on the top of a hill at Tepeyec. She asked that a church be built at the site. Juan Diego went to the bishop who asked for a sign. The next time he went to the hill, Mary appeared to him again. As a sign, the hill was filled with roses, blooming in the middle of winter. Juan picked some of the roses and carried them in his cloak (tilma) to the bishop. When he opened his cloak, the roses fell out and on the garment was the miraculous image of Our Lady. His feast is December 9.
